Measuring groundwater-surface water interactions: a review

چکیده
Papers published in Hydrology and Earth System Sciences Discussions are under open-access review for the journal Hydrology and Earth System Sciences Abstract Interactions between groundwater and surface water play a critical role in the functioning of riparian ecosystems. In the context of sustainable river basin management it is crucial to understand and quantify exchange processes between groundwater and surface water. Numerous well-known methods exist for parameter estimation and process 5 identification in aquifers and surface waters. The transition zone, however, has only in recent years become a subject of major research interest, and the need has evolved for appropriate methods applicable in this zone. This article provides an overview of the methods that are typically used in aquifers and surface waters when studying interactions and shows the possibilities of application in the transition zone. In addition, 10 methods particularly for use in the transition zone are presented. Considerations for choosing appropriate methods are given including spatial and temporal scales, uncertainties , and limitations in application. It is concluded that a multi-scale approach combining multiple measuring methods may considerably constrain estimates of fluxes between groundwater and surface water.

متن کاملGroundwater–surface water interactions, vegetation dependencies and implications for water resources management in the semi-arid Hailiutu River catchment, China – a synthesis
During the last decades, large-scale land use changes took place in the Hailiutu River catchment, a semiarid area in northwest China. These changes had significant impacts on the water resources in the area. Insights into groundwater and surface water interactions and vegetationwater dependencies help to understand these impacts and formulate sustainable water resources management policies. In ...
متن کاملMeasuring groundwater-surface water interaction and its effect on wetland stream benthic productivity, Trout Lake watershed, northern Wisconsin, USA
Measurements of groundwater–surface water exchange at three wetland stream sites were related to patterns in benthic productivity as part of the US Geological Survey’s Northern Temperate Lakes–Water, Energy and Biogeochemical Budgets (NTL–WEBB) project. The three sites included one high groundwater discharge (HGD) site, one weak groundwater discharge (WGD) site, and one groundwater recharge (GR...
متن کاملSurface and groundwater dynamic interactions in the Upper Great Chao Phraya Plain of Thailand: semi-coupling of SWAT and MODFLOW
Surface and groundwater dynamic interaction in the Upper Great Chaophraya Plain of Thailand is explored. The surface-soil water model SWAT and the groundwater model MODFLOW are semi-coupled to determine the various hydrological components and their relevant flow behaviour. The coupled models are executed by running the simulations individually using the monthly river-groundwater interactions an...
متن کاملEstimating Groundwater Fluxes across Interfaces
Water is the most important substance on Earth. While not a mineral itself, water rules the mineral kingdom since interaction with water is fundamental to all geological processes. And water can even slip into the mineral kingdom by freezing into ice. Water occurs in the hydrologic cycle as soil water, groundwater and surface water. We also find water vapor in the atmosphere and frozen water in...
